Words Have Meaning

Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Really? How about “Actions speak louder than words.” I suppose both thoughts have merit.  However, our words and ways we use them can have a profound effect on those around us. The words we use with our loved ones each and every day can indicate how much we really value them. So often we take such care in making sure our public selves are cordial, respectful, and treat even perfect strangers with a certain amount of honor.

Let’s not forget that, while those in our lives love us and have possibly become accustomed to our certain way of acting, our certain way of being, that they are the ones who deserve the extra effort of a kind word most of all. Actions speak louder than words?  Well, perhaps speaking so that your loved one knows and hears the words that they need from time to time, using the words that make them feel special, is indeed an action in itself.

Larry Crabb in his book “Connecting” refers to a conclusion written by Dr. Hans Strupp, a prominent leader in the field of psychotherapy. Dr. Strupp stated “The simple incontrovertible truth, …, is that if you are anorexic or depressed or if you are experiencing difficulties with significant people in your life, chances are that you will fell better if you talk to someone you trust.” How important it is to remember the significance in our words and their effect on others.
